Schedule:
Full-time position, based in the Kona office. Must be available for all scheduled in-office appointments as well as mobile clinic events. Occasional evening and weekend commitments, as well as occasional inter-island travel
About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Clinical Services, the Medical Assistant will be responsible for:
Clinical Support
Assist HMHB’s midwife with all aspects of patient care, including prenatal and postpartum visits, well-woman care, and reproductive health services.
Prepare clinic rooms and patients for appointments, support clinical documentation, and maintain HIPAA-compliant records.
Monitor and restock exam rooms and mobile medical kits, ensuring all equipment and supplies are clean, stocked, and ready for use.
Assist with patient intake, vitals collection, documentation of services rendered, and follow-up scheduling.
Assist with drafting SOAP notes, follow-ups, and client communications as needed under provider supervision.
Support mobile clinics and community-based visits to schools, shelters, partner agencies, and remote areas across Hawai‘i Island.
Ability to conduct health screenings, basic assessments, provide health education, and trauma informed care.
Program Management
Coordinate biweekly distribution of essential supplies (diapers, formula, wipes, hygiene items) in-office, ensuring clients are eligible and appointments are properly scheduled.
Track inventory, manage ordering of essentials through approved vendors, and maintain organized stock levels.
Work collaboratively with HMHB clinical and social service teams to ensure clients accessing essentials are also connected to relevant HMHB services.
Help prepare for monthly outreach distributions at partner sites, including packing, logistics, and documentation.
Track patient and client participation across HMHB services, supporting internal reporting and grant compliance needs.
Support partnership coordination by communicating with external agencies, organizing outreach schedules, and ensuring service continuity for families.
Facilitate in-office support groups offered by HMHB, including new parent groups, perinatal wellness, and culturally grounded programming.
Other duties as assigned.
Community Engagement & Event Support
Participate in weekly and monthly outreach events, including baby showers, school-based health fairs, vaccine clinics, and shelter visits.
Provide support with set-up, coordination, and breakdown of community events, occasionally during evenings or weekends.
Engage directly with families, providing culturally sensitive education and promoting HMHB’s clinical and social service programs.
Represent HMHB at partner events and contribute to community trust-building through compassionate, client-centered service delivery.
Qualifications
Certified Medical Assistant (MA) or equivalent clinical experience required.
At least 2 years of experience in maternal health, family services, or public health.
Strong understanding of community health principles, social determinants of health, and health disparities.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and interact with diverse stakeholders.
Strong time management, adaptability, and organizational skills.
Ability to navigate and refer clients to appropriate healthcare and social services.
Strong communication skills for community outreach, advocacy, and client engagement.
Knowledge of public health resources, local healthcare systems, and social service networks.
Must be based in West Hawai‘i (Kona) and have reliable transportation.
Occasional weekend or evening availability for events or mobile clinics.
